Moving Prep – Step 2 Packing

I’m not sure if I dread this phase of moving more than the unpacking stage.  No matter how organized you are, your world is unsettled and you have to adjust. Packing isn’t hard within itself, but here are a few tips that should help make it easier and less stressful.

  • Decide what you absolutely need up until you walk out the door of the old place.
    • Clothes
    • Tools
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Toiletries
    • Pet items
    • etc
    • This helps you to know what not to pack. Once you have decided on what is not necessary for living with the bare minimum for a few days you can move on to the next step.
  • Know what you will need the first week in the new place.
    • Cooking items ( pots, pans)
    • Clothes
    • Tool
    • Essentially the same things from the first bullet, but with a consideration that you have moved and may have different needs. I know that there are Certain items that I need up in my new place to make it feel like home. So not only will I pack a bag for the week with clothes, but I have a box where I put my “I NEED YOU!!!” items in for easy access.

I used to not do either of these steps and would just spend the first two days in my new place having limited sleep in an attempt to get everything unpacked and home feeling like home. While it works it’s so much more stressful and not conducive to my current life now.

Supplies:

  • Buy boxes. You can also get them for free from many places as well.
  • Pick up any extra packing materials you will need.
  • Label each box in multiple places with or get creative with your identifiers.
  • Pack one room to a box. This ensures that all items are in the room it needs to be unpacked into and can be put in that room when moving boxes in.
  • Keep your important documents in a separate waterproof envelope in you primary bag that you will be carrying. Sturdy backpacks are ideal for moving day, or store in your overnight bag, or suitcase.

Some companies like Uhaul offer to buy back boxes you don’t end up needing.

**Pre- Plan moving day, with contingencies.**
